This project is a part of Edenor’s Corporate Social Responsibility policies aimed at improving the quality of life of its customers, its relationship with the State, corporate profitability and care for the environment.
Edenor proposes the incorporation of certain constructive and technological characteristics (in the design and the materials) upon building houses with the help of social authorities. Edenor’s proposals together with a program for community training to undertake a rational use of energy seek to reduce consumption and might be applied in massive home construction plans. For this purpose, Edenor designed a pilot project of 40 homes to test each one of its proposals.
The objectives pursued and outcomes expected revolve around attaining approximately 30% savings in residential energy consumption, disseminating and encouraging an awareness of the efficient use of energy as well as the technologies that may contribute to it, generating standards to replicate these technologies on a large-scale basis and raising the Company’s image in the eyes of its customers, State representatives and public opinion at large.
During 2008, the new houses built and launched in 2007 started to show the first reductions in energy consumption. These results point to the fact that the two families who live in the prototypes of energetically efficient houses built with the help of social authorities by Edenor attain energy savings in the region of 35% with better quality of life and comfort for their dwellers. These units rely on solar collectors for water heating, a multi-function heater within the home that can be used for cooking and for heating the rooms as well as other breakthroughs.
In addition, in the year 2008 Edenor refurbished 8 houses in the framework of the project through the generation and introduction of an “energy efficiency kit” in houses in the same neighborhood and in various maintenance conditions. The main objective of this kit is to provide thermal insulation and water-proofing in the houses (improving temperature and decreasing humidity) for which purpose work was done in the roofs, the walls, the openings and the floors.
At the same time, Edenor implemented a program for the social advancement of the whole neighborhood as well as a number of workshops on the efficient use of energy that were open to all neighbors.
This project will continue during 2009, introducing alternative technologies for attaining energy savings through technical and social measurements in all the aspects of the project and through the dissemination of the positive outcomes obtained for their massive replication.
